Sip and Learn: Unveiling 2022 Sauvignon Blancs

Our winemakers thought it would be fun to create two very delightful but unique Sauvignon Blancs for the 2022 vintage. Each of these wines has similarities and differences. Try these wines and have your palate experience the journey with us!

Sauvignon Blanc – Estate Colleciton

The 2022 Sauvignon blanc exhibits a vivid varietal character that is rooted in our estate Margarita Vineyard and other select sites in Paso Robles. Collectively, these vineyards produce a Sauvignon Blanc that strikes a fine balance of ripeness and raciness, with crisp acidity and appealing mineral accents.

Soil Type: Rocky Alluvium

Varietal Composition: Sauvignon Blanc (100%)

Harvest Dates: August 15 – September 9

Aging Regimen: 3 months in stainless steel

Final Analysis: Alcohol 13.5

Winemaking Notes

Our aim is to produce an authentic Sauvignon Blanc that reflects both the marine-influenced growing conditions at Margarita Vineyard and the tropical fruit tones of warmer Paso Robles vineyard sites. The vast majority of our Sauvignon Blanc fruit was harvested in late August, in advance of a sustained heat wave that began on Labor Day weekend – allowing for balanced flavor maturity and acid retention. Each Sauvignon Blanc lot was cold fermented at 55 degrees to retain delicate aromatics and pure fruit flavors. The wine was then aged for three months in stainless steel tanks to further preserve textural crispness.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc opens with fresh aromas of grapefruit, peach skin and tropical papaya. The mouthfeel is beautifully textured with flavors of citrus, green apple and pineapple wrapped around a varietal core of minerality and grassiness. Quenching acidity persists along a bright, tangy finish.

Sauvignon Blanc – Pearl Collection

This small-bath Sauvignon Blanc represents a special winemaker’s selection from our estate Margarita Vineyard, offering a uniquely elevated rendition of this classic Bordeaux variety. This wine wholly fermented and aged in French oak barrels to create a distinctive Sauvignon blanc with singular depth and texture. Only 16 barrels produced.

Soil Type: Rocky Alluvium

Varietal Composition: Sauvignon Blanc (100%)

Harvest Dates: September 9

Aging Regimen: 12 months in French oak barrels

Final Analysis: Alcohol 13.5

Winemaking Notes

The 2022 growing season was moderate through mid-summer, although dry winter conditions and low yields accelerated the ripening process. The fruit was harvested on September 9. After whole-cluster pressing, the juice was settled in stainless steel tanks for 48 hours, then racked to 25 percent new French oak barrels for fermentation. After fermentation, wine was aged on the lees in these same barrels for 12 months prior to blending and bottling. Fermentation and aging in oak barrels brought a different dimension to our Sauvignon Blanc experience, accentuating the grape’s signature freshness with a rare sense of breadth and length on the palate.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Pearl Collection offers multifaceted aromas of honeysuckle, green apple, melon, citrus pith and brioche. Broad, mouthfilling textures flood the palate with apricot, kiwi, pink grapefruit and vanillin oak tones, all unfolding into a soft, silky finish with lingering citrus notes.
